IU School of Nursing dean introduces Elizabeth Madigan.

Healthcare leaders, nursing faculty, and friends of nursing in the Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, area attended a champagne and strawberries reception 12 April 2018 in conjunction with the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Inspiring Leaders conference. Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON) and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) co-hosted the reception.
IUSON Dean Robin Newhouse introduced Elizabeth Madigan, PhD, RN, FAAN, who became Sigma chief executive officer in November 2017, following the retirement of Patricia Thompson, EdD, RN, FAAN.
“In 1922, six of our school’s first students created Sigma Theta Tau (Sigma) right here in Indianapolis,” Newhouse said. “Since that time, Sigma has grown into the international organization for nursing professionals that you know today. Sigma’s expansion worldwide has occurred under the direction of remarkable leaders. We are so pleased to welcome our new remarkable leader, Dr. Liz Madigan, to continue the legacy.”
Madigan outlined several Sigma initiatives:
- Sigma’s new Career Center provides expert career advice to nurses online or via personal mentoring and coaching.
- The Sigma Foundation for Nursing offers grants ranging from US $2,500 to US $20,000 in support of research to advance patient care and nursing education.
- Leadership opportunities include the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership academies currently underway in North America and Africa and the Emerging Global Healthcare Leadership Symposium, 25-28 September in London.
- Upcoming events include the 29th International Nursing Research Congress, 19-23 July 2018 in Melbourne, Australia; Leadership Connection, 15-18 September 2018 in Indianapolis; and Creating Healthy Work Environments, 22-24 February 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
- Sigma provides a wide variety of online education programs, including the Nurse Manager Certificate Program used by hospitals and schools of nursing throughout the United States.
