Sigma is proud to welcome the Alpha Gamma Alpha Chapter at the Universidad de Navarra to the family—the first Sigma chapter in Spain.
What is the state of nursing in Spain? What does your chapter plan to do to help elevate that?
The state of nursing in Spain is quite good. However, nurses feel tired and overwhelmed in general due to unbearable shifts, overcrowding in some departments, and waiting lists. Our chapter seeks to motivate nurses and drive them towards excellence and leadership.
El estado de la enfermería en España es bastante bueno. Sin embargo, las enfermeras se sienten cansadas y agobiadas, en general, debido a turnos laboriosos, la masificación de pacientes en algunos departamentos clínicos, y las listas de espera.... Nuestro capítulo pretende motivar a las enfermeras e impulsarlas hacia la excelencia y el liderazgo.
Why were you interested in starting a Sigma chapter?
The reason was our interest in raising the level of nursing in general, promoting excellence, and developing leadership, especially among students.
El motivo fue nuestro interés por elevar el nivel de la enfermería en general, y promover la excelencia y el liderazgo, especialmente entre los estudiantes.
Why is it important to have a Sigma chapter in Spain?
We understand that implementing a Sigma chapter in Spain will offer the opportunity to change and improve the honor culture in the Spanish nursing field, so that nurses aspire and work to belong to this association.
Entendemos que la implantación de un capítulo Sigma en España ofrecerá la oportunidad de cambiar y mejorar la cultura de honor en el ámbito de la enfermería española, para que las enfermeras aspiren y trabajen por pertenecer a esta asociación.
What are one or two of your future goals?
We would like to have sufficient resources to help nurses sustain their research and organize any other activities related to the leadership of the profession.
Nos gustaría disponer de recursos suficientes para ayudar a las enfermeras a liderar y mantener sus investigaciones y organizar actividades vinculadas al liderazgo de la profesión
Does having a chapter in Spain make your members feel more connected to the global nursing community? If so, how?
We hope so. We would like to serve as a nexus of union and communication between Spanish nurses and nurses from other contexts and countries.
Esperamos que así sea. Nos gustaría servir de nexo de unión y comunicación entre las enfermeras españolas y las de otros contextos y países.
What are you personally most excited about?
Getting to this point has been a big challenge for us because of the cultural differences and the pandemic. We are really proud to have achieved it.
Llegar a este punto ha sido un gran reto para nosotros, principalmente, por las diferencias culturales que se dan entre nuestro contexto español y la cultura de honor americana. La pandemia también resultó ser una fase difícil. Estamos muy orgullosos de haberlo conseguido.

We would like to thank Professor Dorothy Jones for her involvement and advice throughout the process. It was she who bet on us from the very beginning.
