To be a Sigma nurse

Nursing Centered Editorial Staff |

Six bold visionaries founded Sigma in 1922 to find other nursing students focused on professional growth and excellence. As legend goes, they gathered on a September afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, not far from today’s Sigma Nursing headquarters and started making plans. Little more than a month later, on 5 October 1922, the first constitution and bylaws were approved by Indiana’s secretary of state.

Today, Sigma Nursing is a growing network of thousands of nurses across 100 countries, united by love, courage, and honor—driven by the ideals of connection, leadership, and excellence. Today, this is what it means to be a Sigma nurse.

Connection

Sigma Nursing helped me a lot to be an excellent nurse with all the resources, like articles, magazines, books, and courses. Thanks to Sigma Nursing, I found other colleagues to share our experiences, our doubts, and help each other to improve and progress. I find motivation constantly.

—Antonio Mávil, Tau Alpha Chapter, Mexico

Sigma has helped me grow as a nurse by helping me develop my leadership skills and by giving me opportunities for professional networking. Through the Nightingale Challenge program, I was able to connect with other nurses around the world while learning how to be a leader in both the clinical setting and in life.

Leadership

I had the honor of serving on the board of directors for the Sigma Foundation for Nursing. In this capacity, I was actively involved in several pivotal committees. Specifically, I contributed to the Leadership Education Grant Committee, where we were tasked with selecting recipients from a vast pool of applicants seeking membership subsidies, research funds, and leadership development financial support. I also took the role of a judge for the International Awards for Nursing Excellence, a significant responsibility at the international level. On a regional scale, I was a part of the Sigma Asia Global Regional Committee and was integral to the orchestration of the 2nd Sigma Asia Region Conference held in Dumaguete City, Philippines, back in August 2018. On the chapter front, I devoted seven years, offering my skills and expertise in various roles, such as the leadership succession committee, awards committee, and the outreach and publicity committee. These experiences and engagements with Sigma have been instrumental, serving as stepping stones in my journey to becoming an emerging global nursing leader.

—Jerico G. Alicante, Alpha Eta Chapter, US

Sigma has helped me form meaningful connections and collaborations with people from all over the world. I have attended conferences, met other Sigma members, and learned from their lived experiences. Sigma has taught me a great deal about leadership and taking initiative, even at the chapter level. Taking on a role as a chapter leader has been quite a transition, but I think it has helped me grow as a professional and allowed me to develop skills that I can take into my career and beyond.

—Cat Lawless, Beta Xi at-Large Chapter, US

Sigma has helped me by supporting me in my role as an advocate for the well-being of patients. As a nurse who focuses on and educates patients in the holistic and preventative world of medicine, it prepares me for my role as a professional leader, encourages me to a higher standard of professionalism, and encourages me to pursue my creative dreams.

—Ashley Hidalgo, Omega Gamma Chapter, US

Inspires and recognizes excellence

My membership in the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing has greatly enhanced my understanding of the nursing field and its potential for growth and resilience through the application of evidence-based and ethical practice. Sigma has provided me with a platform to learn from experienced professionals and to engage in meaningful discussions about emerging trends and best practices in nursing. As a result, I have become more confident in my ability to make informed decisions and deliver high-quality care to my patients. Sigma’s emphasis on evidence-based and ethical practices has reinforced the importance of maintaining a rigorous standard of care and has inspired me to continue learning and growing as a nurse.

—Raymond Pagulayan, Phi Gamma Chapter, Abu Dhabi

Being inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was a meaningful and memorable highlight of my graduation festivities. It represents not only a personal achievement but also recognition of the dedication, perseverance, and academic excellence that nursing demands. Sigma is a prestigious organization known for its commitment to leadership, scholarship, and service in the nursing profession. With its high academic and professional standards, receiving an invitation to join was truly an honor—one that I accepted with pride and gratitude.

—Delfino Salinas III, Eta Omicron Chapter, US

To be a Sigma nurse is to join a lineage of excellence. It’s not just about credentials—it’s about character. It means standing in your purpose, uplifting others, and committing to lifelong leadership. Sigma is the intersection of heart, science, and courage. It affirms that my work doesn’t just matter—it belongs. It means that my story—unconventional, unfiltered—has a place in the legacy of global nursing leadership. It’s a symbol that healing, scholarship, and advocacy can take many forms. I’m proud to be part of a community shaping what nursing can become.
