Juli Maxworthy interviews the speaker for congress’s Plenary Session 2.
Considering further education? Dale Beatty, Plenary Session 2 speaker at the 29th International Nursing Research Congress, tells why he chose the DNP degree.
A few weeks prior to congress, I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Dale Beatty, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services at Stanford Health and speaker at Plenary Session 2 on Friday, 20 July. As the person who introduces him, I thought it important to get to know Dale better. Since we work in the same geographic area, it was also quite convenient!
Juli Maxworthy:
How does your speech, “Developing change agents in an ever-evolving healthcare delivery system,” relate to the congress theme, “Innovative global nursing practice and education through research and evidence-based practice”?
Dale Beatty:
Because of the rapid expansion of knowledge underlying practice and the need for experts able to lead system-level quality improvement initiatives that change and improve outcomes, there is a need to expand nursing education at the graduate level. These doctorally prepared nurses are key to translating evidence-based practices and applying them to real-world issues.
Maxworthy:
What was the deciding factor for you in choosing to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree?
Beatty:
It was the degree that aligned best with my background in nursing administration, and it provided space to develop, implement, and evaluate a large change-of-practice project I had wanted to do for years.
Maxworthy:
You’ve been a member of the Global Advisory Panel on the Future of Nursing & Midwifery, also known as GAPFON. Tell me about your experience on that panel.
Beatty:
It was a wonderful opportunity to meet with thought leaders and to share identified opportunities for the profession. It was a great use of my time and Sigma’s.
Maxworthy:
What is the main takeaway you’d like members of the Plenary Session 2 audience to have following your talk?
Beatty:
I hope they will have a better understanding of how the DNP degree is leveraging nursing scholarship and improving global nursing through evidence-based practice, quality improvement, systems redesign, and translational research.
Maxworthy:
