A season of gratitude: Reflections from Sigma's CEO

Sigma Members,

As the year comes to a close, I am deeply moved by the remarkable achievements of our Sigma community in 2024. This has been a year defined by your steadfast dedication to advancing the nursing profession—a commitment that inspires me daily and energizes our collective vision for the future.

Since stepping into the role of CEO, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of you, whether in person or virtually. Each story you’ve shared and every innovative contribution you’ve made has reinforced my belief in the power of Sigma nurses to transform healthcare. From pioneering research to compassionate patient care, your impact resonates worldwide, and I consider it a true honor to champion your efforts.

Inspired by your passion and contributions, I’ve pledged to become a Virginia Henderson Fellow through the Sigma Foundation for Nursing, committing US $10,000 over the next five years. I believe wholeheartedly in investing in the future of nursing and Sigma. Through initiatives like leadership education grants, research funding, and membership subsidies, the Foundation continues to empower nurses and drive meaningful change across our profession.

I’ve also had the pleasure of getting to know our dedicated and resourceful headquarters staff, who will soon gather for a holiday celebration to reflect on this year’s successes. It has been a joy to see their commitment to advancing our mission, and I’m grateful for their hard work and collaboration.

As I reflect on 2024, I’m proud to highlight a few key accomplishments that showcase the strength and resilience of our community:

  • Membership Engagement: The relaunch of The Circle has driven significant activity, including a 6% increase in discussion posts and library views. Additionally, Chapter Leadership Connection brought together over 400 members in real time.
  • Regional Support: Sigma funded over US $21,000 for regional events, including conferences in Europe and North America.
  • Educational Excellence: Since the 2023 convention, Sigma has published 13 new books, with four earning American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year awards.
  • Global Access: Our revamped repository continues to provide free access to invaluable research and resources, supporting nurses around the globe.

As we look ahead to 2025, I am focused on growing and engaging our membership, fostering global partnerships, and enhancing Sigma’s infrastructure. These priorities will guide us in strengthening Sigma’s legacy and setting the stage for a bold, unified future.

Finally, I want to thank you all for the warm welcome I’ve received in my first months as CEO. I look forward to connecting with many of you at our 2025 events, including Creating Healthy Work Environments in March and the International Nursing Research Congress in July, as well as other upcoming nursing conferences.

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a bright start to the new year. Together, we will continue to elevate nursing and transform global healthcare.

With gratitude and best wishes,

Lucas M. Davis, MEd, CAE
