Behind a rising leader is a great mentor

I will never forget how I got involved in holding a leadership position with Sigma’s Gamma Kappa Chapter at the University at Buffalo School of Nursing. Dr. Sharon Hewner, an associate dean, professor, and former Sigma chapter president, approached me after the spring 2023 commencement ceremony and asked if I was interested in being on the next ballot for chapter president. I immediately said, “I am honored, but I have so much on my plate right now. I respectfully decline.” Dr. Hewner told me to at least think about it.

I was finishing up my practicum project for my DNP program on top of my academic obligations as a full-time clinical instructor, and I just felt it was not a good time. But Dr. Hewner was persistent. After our initial conversation, she followed up with an email and in-person meeting. When Dr. Hewner said that the chapter needed more representation from the undergraduate nursing program, I decided I was up for the challenge. I have always believed in keeping your opportunities open, exploring all options, never saying “never,” and collaborating and networking. I preach that to my students, and it was time for me to set an example.

There was a lot to learn, and I am thankful for Dr. Hewner’s mentorship, the support of my board members, and the assistance of the university staff for meetings, IT needs, and administrative functions. I am beginning to understand more about the different roles and opportunities and how to maximize the limited time I have dedicated to the chapter.

In very my short leadership role since September 2023, I have led the chapter towards a successful induction, started a collaboration with a local agency that supports immigrants and refugees, and encouraged new members to think of simple initiatives they can implement within their network. We recently held a winter coat drive and had a get-together for the spring semester with games, baskets, and Valentine’s Day card making.

Without Dr. Sharon Hewner’s encouragement, I would not have had the privilege to attend the 47th Biennial Convention in San Antonio, Texas, USA, where I met amazing global nurse leaders and professionals. It was an opportunity of learning and networking. I listened to outstanding speakers and learned so much! I talked to poster presenters and celebrated their success stories in research. Hearing the names of chapter award recipients was encouraging enough to keep going with my current role to take steps towards a second Chapter Key Award. It was also wonderful to support the university’s rising stars during their poster presentations. You have to be a cheerleader, too!

Stepping into this leadership position has truly been a transformative experience for me, and I have Dr. Hewner to thank for that. As I continue to navigate this role, I am committed to championing our members and striving towards excellence, fueled by the belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of seizing every opportunity for growth. Together, we will continue to make a positive impact in the field of nursing and beyond!
