Sigma Publishing awarded four 2019 AJN Book of the Year Awards

Three first-place awards and one third-place award raise total to 43 AJN Book of the Year awards.

Sigma Publishing finished 2019 in award-winning fashion! Two Sigma books each received two AJN Book of the Year Awards. The four awards for 2019 raise the total for Sigma Publishing to 43 AJN Book of the Year Awards.

The 2019 award-winning titles are:

The Influence of Psychological Trauma in Nursing, by Karen J. Foli and John R. The Influence of Psych Trauma in NursingThompson, was awarded first place in the Nursing Education/Continuing Education/Professional Development category and first place in the Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing category.

The Influence of Psychological Trauma in Nursing helps nurses gain awareness and knowledge about trauma and recovery so they can heal and bring holistic healing to others. The authors provide a primer on psychological trauma, helping readers identify and understand the common forms of trauma in society. Filled with examples, tools, assessments, and learning objectives, this book helps nurses move forward as trauma-informed caregivers.

AJN Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing judge Martha Mathews Libster, PhD, MSN, APRN-CNS, stated: “This groundbreaking book honors the sacredness of the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. The authors … radiate compassion and understanding in every page.”

In awarding the book first place in the Nursing Education/Continuing Education/Professional Development category, AJN judge Gloria Donnelly, PhD, RN, FAAN, FCPP, noted that the book is “an evidence-based treatment of psychological trauma, focusing on the human toll and manifestations of trauma related to abuse, neglect, conflict, and the stressors of the nursing role.”

Mastering Precepting: A Nurse’s Handbook for Success, Second Edition, by Beth Mastering Precepting, 2eUlrich, was awarded first place in the Medical-Surgical Nursing category and third place in the Education/Continuing Education/Professional Development category.

Written for staff nurses, their managers, and educators, this second edition of Mastering Precepting: A Nurse’s Handbook for Success teaches preceptors both the science and art of precepting and empowers them to seek the support they need to be effective. For managers, it emphasizes the importance of providing nurse preceptors with positive and supportive experiences. For educators, it provides the information and knowledge required to develop and improve preceptor programs.

“[Mastering Precepting] is a must-read for those leading or educating nurse preceptors, in addition to those clinical experts who selflessly take on the role of preceptor,” said AJN judge Christopher A. VanFosson, PhD, MHA, RN, in awarding the book first place in the Medical-Surgical Nursing category.

In the Nursing Education/Continuing Education/Professional Development category, AJN judge Gloria Donnelly, PhD, RN, FAAN, FCPP, commented, “Nurses precepting students or colleagues at any level will find this book to be an invaluable resource.”
