Blaise Nieve’s nursing journey spans continents and roles, shaping him into a leader and educator. What once felt uncertain is now a life dedicated to the heart of nursing. His mission? To live his purpose, lead with cultural humility, and serve others.

“Nursing is not easy, but it is worth it.”

Blaise Nieve’s nursing career has taken him across the globe—from the Philippines to the United Kingdom, and now to the United States. Along the way, he’s served as a staff nurse, clinical instructor, program chair, clinical lead, and educator, to name a few. Though the journey was challenging, each step has strengthened his passion for nursing and shaped him into the clinician, educator, and leader he is today.

Blaise first pursued nursing because it was his father’s wish for him. And at first, he struggled. Was this really the right fit for him? But as he started connecting with patients, colleagues, and mentors, he witnessed the heart that drives nursing. He knew then that nursing wasn’t just something he wanted to do; it was something he had to do.

“Each step, whether in practice, education, management, or research, has deepened my understanding of nursing’s power to transform lives and has shaped me into the clinician, educator, and leader I am today,” he said.

Though Blaise now lives and works in the United States, he maintains strong ties to his roots. He virtually teaches nursing PhD students in the Philippines, staying connected to the community that inspired him.

“My family’s sacrifices gave me the drive to persevere, even in the toughest times,” he said. “My mentors believed in me when I doubted myself, and the communities I’ve been part of, whether Filipino nurses abroad, colleagues, or professional organizations, have continually lifted me.”

Throughout his career, Blaise has learned what it truly means to be a nurse. His advice to others: Come with an open heart, a willingness to learn, and always remember “your patients won’t always remember your clinical interventions, but they will remember how you made them feel.”

Blaise Nieve, PhD, PhD, RN, CMSRN, NEA-BC, CAVRN, CPAFH has been a Sigma member since 2021 and belongs to the Psi Beta Chapter. He is a former participant of the Virtual Mini Academy: Global Advocacy. Blaise obtained his PhD in nursing in 2024 from the San Pedro College in the Philippines, though he currently works at Duke University Hospital in the United States. Recently, he was recognized as one of the 2025 Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina, USA, a success which he attributes to the support of his colleagues who have believed in him. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue serving his community in North Carolina while shaping the next generation of nurses in the Philippines.

Caring for others, whether in a disaster zone or at the bedside, Bijaya Deuja exemplifies global nursing excellence. As a recipient of the United Nations Medal of Peacekeeper, her impact across borders is undeniable.

Bijaya Deuja has served as a valuable nurse leader in both Nepal and the United States, making a significant global impact. From working for and with the Nepal law enforcement to serving as a UN peacekeeper, Bijaya’s focus always remains on care.

“Whether it's providing comfort and care during difficult times, advocating for their needs, or celebrating their recovery, the ability to make a difference in someone's life is incredibly rewarding,” she said.

As the Sub-Inspector at the Nepal Police Hospital, Bijaya cared for the physical and mental health of the Nepal police personnel and their families. She also responded to disasters, national crises, and some emergency situations—in which she acted as both a nurse and law enforcement officer, protecting and healing the public.

In 2015, a catastrophic earthquake struck Nepal. Bijaya not only worked in the hospital to provide care to the injured, but she also successfully conducted a comprehensive project of psychosocial counseling, stress management, first aid, and free health camps. With the help of her associates, the Nepal Police Department worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide rescue services, support, and care to the entire disaster zone.

While serving simultaneously as a police officer and a nurse was not easy, Bijaya says she simply wanted to serve people in every way possible.

“I wanted to be a role model for women around the globe, demonstrating that dedication and commitment to serving others knows no boundaries,” she said. “I believe that by showcasing my versatility in these two distinct fields, I can inspire and empower women to break down barriers and work towards a common goal of humanity.”

But her impact is far greater than her service to Nepal’s community. During her tenure as a senior nursing officer for the United Nations (UN) from 2018-2019, Bijaya was awarded the UN Medal of Peacekeeper for her service in the Peacekeeping Operations mission.

During her time at UN, Bijaya was responsible for providing humanitarian assistance, networking with UN police officers, and providing awareness and understanding to protect citizens and make the peacekeeping force approachable to women in the community. Thanks to her experience in both nursing and police force duties, she was able to successfully reduce conflict and confrontation in the communities she supported.

As a nurse in the UN, her role involved providing medical care and support to personnel deployed in UN peacekeeping operations. In any given mission area, she would care for patients and officers in her hospital while simultaneously working with other medical personnel to ensure the well-being of everyone in the affected area. She also fulfilled her duties as an officer in the UN by patrolling, offering security, and escorting officials.

Though adapting to diverse communities and cultures—as well as the physical and emotional impact of the role—presented challenges, Bijaya found the opportunity to serve in the UN to be rewarding.

“The appreciation and recognition received from international police officers, women's networks, and UN dignitaries for our hard work and dedication served as a source of motivation and fulfillment. The sense of making a positive impact on the lives of those in need was truly rewarding and gratifying,” she said.

Now, Bijaya continues to serve the communities around her as a bedside nurse, though her goals have shifted from global care to focused, patient-centered care.

“Overall, the transition from working for the UN to becoming a bedside nurse requires a shift in focus from global issues to individual patient care, as well as a new set of skills and competencies,” she said. “While the two roles may seem vastly different, both involve serving others and making a positive difference in the world, albeit in different capacities.”

Bijaya’s service to the world is recognizable, not only through the prestigious awards she has received, but also through her impact. No matter where—or how—she serves, Bijaya embodies global nursing excellence.

Learn why Sigma volunteer Mariyam Huda never stops learning.

      Volunteer Experience:

Always motivated and dedicated to leading the development of solutions to assist vulnerable and underprivileged community members, Mariyam Huda learned about volunteer opportunities through the Sigma website and there was no second thought about it. She has found that there is no single learning with Sigma. “You learn every day, and you learn something new and wonderful about nursing and nurses across the world as many times as you log in, and that's the beauty of being part of Sigma.”

Mariyam currently serves as a Mentor in Sigma’s Mentoring Cohort and as a Community Ambassador on The Circle, facilitating conversations in the Hospice and Palliative Care Community and the Nurse Educator Community. These volunteer opportunities have allowed her to connect with other nurse leaders and better understand nursing from different perspectives. Insights have been gathered from conversations about the many nursing roles that she does not have in her country as well as opportunities to empathize with others on the global crisis of the nursing staff shortage.

Her favorite experience so far has been being able to share her experiences and represent the Maldives by authoring an article for Nursing Centered. “Sharing the challenges faced by Maldives inaccessibility of healthcare due to its geographical distribution and how telemedicine would be the best possible solution (especially at the peak of pandemic) was an opportunity I will cherish forever.”

Chosen to care: Improving the health of the older population

When Kuei-Min Chen graduated nursing school, she had no idea what was next. Now, she dedicates her entire profession to promoting the health of older adults, and she wouldn't change a thing.

Kuei-Min Chen, PhD, RN, FAAN, didn’t choose the gerontological nursing path. It chose her.

Upon receiving her 5-year nursing junior college education from Fooyin University in Taiwan, Kuei-Min knew she wanted to further her education in graduate school but didn’t have her heart set on a specialty. At the time, Fooyin University lacked instructors in the gerontological nursing field, and they needed someone to take on this specialty so they could help teach it. So, the university reached out to Kuei-Min to ask if she was willing to pursue the field of gerontological nursing, given that they would provide a scholarship for her at the University of Minnesota to do so. She obliged, and since then, she’s never looked back.

“Through these years of working with older adults and involving in long-term care policy development, I am so fortunate to realize that this field is where I belong,” Kuei-Min said. “I have no regrets since then.”

After earning her MS in gerontological nursing in 1996, Kuei-Min went back to Fooyin University, where she taught for 1 1/2 years as a lecturer until she was offered another scholarship to return to the University of Minnesota to receive her PhD. She returned to Fooyin in 2000 and worked as an associate professor until 2007, when she was promoted to full professor.

At 34 years old, Kuei-Min became the youngest nursing professor in the history of nursing in Taiwan. She later went on to be the first nurse researcher to be appointed as the Chair of Nursing Research Field by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

      This was just the beginning.

In 2010, she was recruited by the Dean of the College of Nursing and the President of Kaohsiung Medical University, where she established the first master’s degree program of long-term care in aging in southern Taiwan and a university-level research center named the Center for Long-term Care Research.

“My academic career has always been involved with administration, teaching, and research,” Kuei-Min said. “I treated each task as a learning experience, and these experiences make me grow and build up my capacity.”

Now, Kuei-Min uses her education, experiences, and research far beyond the classroom. She has established and led an interdisciplinary research team to develop six different exercise programs to promote the health of older adults. These programs consist of:

      (1) Simplified Tai-Chi Exercise Program (STEP); (2) Silver Yoga (SY); (3) Senior Elastic Band (SEB); (4) Wheelchair-bound Senior Elastic Band (WSEB); (5) Healthy Beat Acupunch (HBA); and (6) Vitality Acupunch (VA).

Kuei-Min has trained more than 300 volunteers to serve as exercise instructors for these six programs, which have been actively and widely promoted and practiced in more than 200 community care centers and 20 long-term care facilities in southern Taiwan.

Over 900 older adults have experienced improved health and function as a result of participation.

Kuei-Min personally trains some of the middle-aged volunteers to become certified instructors. Though the exercise programs aren’t designed for them, even the trainers experience benefits from their participation in the program.

“I see their eyes are glowing, their confidence in leading, helping, and promoting the health of older population, and their appreciation of gaining new meaning in their middle life,” Kuei-Min said. “That empowers me to continue my research journey!”

Not only does Kuei-Min actively promote the health of older adults, but she takes a stand for it, too. She is consistently involved in long-term care policymaking on healthcare delivery for older adults in private and governmental agencies in Taiwan and serves as a professional consultant for public sectors. In this role, she has helped develop the 10-Year Long-Term Care Plan, a nationally implemented program affecting more than 3.1 million older adults in Taiwan.

Kuei-Min has dedicated her entire career to helping the older population, and she can see her work paying off. She’s helped provide rehabilitation services to 12,000 older adults with disabilities, helped improve the care quality of 160 long-term care facilities, facilitated an “aging-friendly city” for 420,000 older adults, and raised the awareness of 2.8 million residents of Kaohsiung City to the issues on aging and long-term care.

“The most rewarding [part] about the work I do is that I can make a small contribution and difference to this aging society based on my expertise,” Kuei-Min said.

Gerontology may not have been where she saw her nursing career taking her, but it’s where she belonged. The impact she’s made in Taiwan is evidence of that.

Kuei-Min Chen, PhD, RN, FAAN, is an active member of the Lambda Beta at-Large Chapter and has been a member of Sigma for 27 years. She has received multiple prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing from the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence; the Distinguished International Alumni Leadership Award from University of Minnesota; Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing; the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame and Amy J. Berman International Geriatric Nursing Leadership Award from Sigma Nursing; Outstanding Nursing Professional Contribution from the Taiwan Nurses Association; Distinguished Alumni of Fooyin University; and the Clinical Medicine Research Award from the Gerontological Society of America.

Sigma nurse Evalyn Abalos is intentional about infusing joy and enabling others to do so as well.

While attending the 45th Biennial Convention in Washington, DC, USA, representing Sigma’s Psi Beta Chapter, Evalyn Abalos, PhD, RN, heard Sigma President Richard Ricciardi speak at the closing plenary. “As I went back to the Philippines, I brought with me President Ricciardi’s Call to Action to Infuse Joy. In my country, I can contribute to a positive  workplace culture so I must be intentional in my actions to spread joy and enable others to infuse joy in the workplace,” she said.

Evalyn practices this by leading an authentic life and taking care to practice her values consistently to ensure she creates a pleasing work environment. She is also developing her mentoring skills to help others see the best in themselves, because “When people are inspired and happy, they make others happy, too.”

Another way she is working to infuse joy in the workplace is through improved communications. She admits some conversations are by nature confrontational. However, she believes that by taking the time to listen to the viewpoints of others, conflicts can be more easily resolved.

In her current role as an Associate Professor in the Graduate Program of Silliman University (Philippines), she is making contributions to the nursing profession by educating in health leadership and governance. As part of her commitment, she serves on the Technical Committee for Nursing Education with the Commission on Higher Education for the Republic of the Philippines and as the Chair of the Leadership Succession Committee for Psi Beta Chapter.

Evalyn was the recipient of a leadership education grant from the Sigma Foundation for Nursing. This grant assisted her with expenses for Sigma’s 45th Biennial Convention. “Coming from a middle-income country, it would have been impossible for me to attend this convention without the generous financial support.” These grants are only possible with donations from members like you. If you want to help more Sigma nurses like Evalyn participate in Sigma events, donate today.

Sigma nurse leader earns Delta Theta Giving Circle Leadership Education Grant, using it to present her research at Sigma’s 2018 International Nursing Research Congress.
Psi Beta Chapter member Carielle Joy Rio’s journey in the field of nursing began early in her life. Her mother is a nurse, and Carielle was inspired by her mother’s calmness and judgment during times of sickness in her family. So, when it came time for Carielle to choose a major at university, the choice was easy. “I thought nursing would somehow allow me to take care of both myself and my parents; enabling me to make better health decisions for them as they grew older.”

Carielle earned both her bachelor of science and her master’s in nursing from Central Philippine University and worked as a staff nurse at West Visayas State University Medical Center in the Philippines. She would go on to earn her PhD in nursing from Silliman University. It was during her time at Silliman that she was exposed to Sigma and a whole new world of experiences was opened to her. “It [Sigma] has given me access to great resources like the Virginia Henderson Repository, allowed me to connect and interact with other scholars and really learn from their works.”

Today, Carielle is a member of the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Pelita Harapan in Indonesia, using her personal and professional experiences to guide and support the next generation of nurses. When asked what she enjoys the most about what she’s doing professionally today, Carielle mentioned her students and her community works immediately. “Prior to moving to Indonesia to teach, I was a community nurse with Medical Ambassadors Philippines, where we serve the indigenous cultural communities when healthcare resources are scarce. I was also a volunteer nurse educator for women who were victims of prostitution and human trafficking.” She continues, “The opportunity to work as a nurse educator in a foreign country is as rewarding as it is challenging. I have always been fascinated with languages, and learning a new language is a huge plus for me. Indonesia is a country rich with culture and beautiful geography. My students come from all over Indonesia; bringing with them the culture and perspectives of their respective ethnic groups, making it a great environment for learning.”

In between her duties as a faculty member, this past July Carielle was able to attend and present her research at Sigma’s 29th International Nursing Research Congress, thanks to a Leadership Education Grant provided by the Delta Theta Giving Circle. The Delta Theta Giving Circle Leadership Education Grant is funded by donors from the Delta Theta Chapter who donate a set amount each year in order to provide funding for members from low- or middle-income countries who want to attend Sigma events.  “Thanks to the generosity of the Delta Theta Giving Circle, not only was I able to attend the congress and present my research, but I was also able to connect with Sigma nurse scholars who share similar research interests and learn from their works.” She continues, “The sessions and plenary also gave me new insights about research and nursing; and I was able to learn more about the Sigma chapter-development process. Doing so deepened my appreciation and commitment of the nurse scholars who gave so much to establish my home chapter [Psi Beta Chapter].”

Sigma nurse leader Jordan Salvador takes his passion (and his profession!) seriously as he continues to serve others and inspire the next generation of nurses.
It started with a scholarship grant. Originally wanting to be a medical doctor, Pi Iota and Alpha Eta Chapter member Dr. Jordan Salvador found himself the recipient of a full scholarship to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Immediately, he knew everything was going to get better. “I came from a family with an average socioeconomic status and life hasn’t always been easy without money. As soon as I was offered the scholarship grant for full tuition in the BSN program at the Saint Francis of Assisi College in Las Piñas, Philippines, though, I began to have hope that everything would change.”

And change it did. After receiving his nursing license in 2007, Jordan began working in the Male Medical surgical ward at the Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines-Seamen’s Hospital (AMOSUP Seamen’s) in Manila, Philippines. While employed, he was awarded a second, full-tuition scholarship grant that allowed him to enroll in a Master of Arts in Nursing program, with a focus in Nursing Administration. Jordan completed his master’s program in two years, earning both his MA in Nursing as well as a promotion to Intensive Care Unit Manager at AMOSUP Seamen’s. Still feeling that pull toward greatness, Jordan began his first PhD journey with his third scholarship grant — one that fully funded his PhD program at Philippine Women’s University Manila. In 2014, Jordan graduated and earned his doctorate, passing his PhD program and received an invitation to join the ranks of great nurse leaders, researchers, and clinicians from around the world through Sigma’s Pi Iota Chapter in Hong Kong. He would later earn his second PhD from Saint Paul University Manila, graduating summa cum laude in Nursing Education, focusing on Educational Leadership and Management.

Even though he was excited by the invitation and gladly joined Sigma, Jordan didn’t get too involved or engage much with his chapter at first. That all changed when he was able to meet past Sigma Chief Executive Officer Dr. Patricia Thompson and past Sigma President Dr. Hester C. Klopper during the Inaugural Asia Regional Conference held in Yerevan, Armenia, in 2015, where he was one of the plenary speakers. “I was moved and astonished with how these nursing leaders were able to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.” He continues, “The love and passion for the profession radiates from these leaders; seen in the ways they speak and interact with members. I really admired them and wanted to be them.”

This moment acted as a catalyst for Jordan, as he realized his desire to inspire and lead future generations of nurses, igniting the same passion for the nursing profession in others that had been ignited for him. “I want the younger generations to know that all things are possible as long as we act on them. You can make a difference as long as you have the love, passion, and dedication to serve others.” With that thought in mind, Jordan accepted a lecturer post position at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (formerly the University of Dammam) in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He worked his way up and is presently one of the youngest assistant professors and PhD holders there. Further, he was also a key force (and the only Filipino) who led the national college accreditation charge for Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, receiving full accreditation status in 2017. He has been appointed as the Chairperson for Quality Assurance and Accreditation unit, is a Supervisor for the Examination and Assessment unit, and has been awarded a fellowship in Quality in Healthcare by the International Society of Quality in Healthcare (ISQua).

When asked what he enjoys most about his work today, his answer echoes what he’s most passionate about in the profession: education and research. “As a nurse educator, I enjoy mentoring and coaching future nurses, whether in education, practice, or research. I also enjoy presenting my own research projects and works in various nursing conferences around the world and meeting, building professional networks, and lifelong friendships with my fellow Sigma members.” He also makes time to give back to those in both his geographical and professional communities, as a way to honor those who came before him while providing leadership to those who will come after. “Although I currently work in Saudi Arabia, I make sure that whenever I’m back in the Philippines, I organize and conduct mentoring sessions for young nurses to help encourage their initiatives and active volunteerism with projects that promote healthy and advance nursing as a profession.”

Even though he exudes this leadership style in everything he does, Jordan still claims he can’t take all the credit. “Sigma motivated me to walk the talk and start doing something for others. For me, Sigma isn’t just a nursing organization, but a newfound family that develops nurses to be the leaders of today and tomorrow. Sigma will continue to grow because of its passionate leaders who believe in the potentials of its members — myself included.”
