Sigma is proud to welcome the Alpha Beta Omicron Chapter at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile to the family—the first Sigma chapter in Chile.
What is the state of nursing in Chile? And what does your chapter plan to do to help elevate that?
Enfermería en Chile es una carrera de formación a nivel universitario que los últimos años ha tenido una mayor demanda de formación, lo que aumentó producto de la visibilidad que tuvo durante la pandemia COVID 19.
Actualmente y dado el nivel de salud que ha alcanzado Chile, enfermería tiene la oportunidad de avanzar en formación de posgrados académicos/investigación para aportar a la disciplina de enfermería y a nivel de formación de posgrado profesional como son las especialidades y los programas de magíster en enfermería de práctica avanzada. Nuestra Escuela pretende aportar desde la formación de recurso humano especializado.
Nursing in Chile is a university-level training course that has seen an increased demand for training in recent years, which increased as a result of the visibility nursing received during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, and given the level of health that Chile has reached, nursing has the opportunity to advance in academic/research postgraduate training to contribute to the discipline and at the level of professional postgraduate training. This includes specialties and advanced practice master's degree programmes. Our chapter is committed to contributing to the training of specialized nursing workforce.
What does healthcare and the healthcare industry look like in your country?
El sistema de salud en Chile es de carácter mixto, es decir conviven un sistema público al cual está adscrito el 80% de la población y un sistema privado. Actualmente, las principales causas de mortalidad en el país son el cáncer, las patologías cardiovasculares y traumatismos y envenenamiento. Asimismo, las principales dificultades que enfrenta el sistema de salud son las posibilidades de acceso y cobertura de los usuarios, lo que genera importantes brechas de equidad y compromete la sobrevida de las personas. Si bien, los indicadores globales de salud son buenos, existen diferencias, en términos de resultados en salud, para quienes acceden al sistema público y quienes acceden al sistema privado.
The health system in Chile is mixed; there is a public system, to which 80% of the population belongs, and a private system. Currently, the main causes of mortality in the country are cancer, cardiovascular pathologies, trauma, and poisoning. In addition, the main difficulties faced by the health system are the possibilities of access and coverage of users, which generates important equity gaps and compromises people's survival. Although overall health indicators are good, there are differences in terms of health outcomes for those who access the public system and those who access the private system.
What drove your interest in chartering a Sigma chapter?
Sigma es una sociedad científica honorífica en enfermería, que destaca por su interés en elevar el nivel de enfermería mundialmente, por lo que nos pareció importante ser parte de este legado y contribuir al desarrollo de enfermería de la región y a nivel global.
Hemos visto la contribución de Sigma para enfermería y quisimos ser parte para acercar sigma a Chile y del mismo modo aportar desde nuestro territorio y experiencias en el marco de un trabajo colaborativo. Asimismo, reconocer a enfermeras y enfermeros destacados que sean referentes para el desarrollo de la disciplina en nuestro país y que a su vez establezcan vínculos interculturales.
Sigma is a scientific honorary society in nursing, which stands out for its interest in raising the standard of nursing worldwide, so we felt it was important to be part of this legacy and contribute to the development of nursing in the region and globally.
We have seen Sigma's contribution to nursing, and we wanted to be part of bringing Sigma to Chile.
What impact do you hope your chapter will have on nursing in your country?
Esperamos que impacte en el desarrollo de la disciplina de enfermería y de la profesión. Asimismo, esperamos que permita impulsar y posicionar a enfermería del país y en la región.
We hope it will have an impact on the development of the nursing discipline and the profession. We also hope that it will help to promote and position nursing in the country.
Why is it important to have a Sigma chapter in Chile?
Es importante porque significa un reconocimiento de la enfermería de Chile y de la UC. Contribuye a traer a nuestro país a una sociedad honorífica, de renombre internacional, que contribuya a elevar el nivel de enfermería.
It is important because it means a recognition of nursing in Chile and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC). It contributes to bringing to our country an honorary society of international renown, which contributes to raising the level of nursing.
What are some of your future goals? And what types of activities do you have planned?
Pensamos difundir Sigma en nuestro país y en la región, fortalecer la sociedad con nuevos miembros destacados. Asimismo, pensamos impulsar la investigación y el reconocimiento de enfermeras líderes.
We plan to spread Sigma in our country and in the region to strengthen the society with new outstanding members. We also plan to promote research and recognition of nurse leaders.
Does having a chapter in Chile make your members feel more connected to the global nursing community? If so, how?
El contar con un capítulo en Chile, permitirá a los miembros conectarse con la red global de enfermería. Como capítulo tendremos la responsabilidad de ser un puente que impulse la conexión con la red y proponer estrategias que permitan conectarse a través de investigación y trabajo colaborativo.
Having a chapter in Chile will allow members to connect with the global nursing network. As a chapter, we will have the responsibility to be a bridge that promotes the connection with the network and to propose strategies that allow us to connect through research and collaborative work.
What benefits of Sigma membership is the chapter most looking forward to and why?
Los beneficios que pensamos que los miembros buscan con mayor interés es la conexión global que SIGMA provee y la posibilidad de acceder a fondos de investigación.
The benefits we think members are most looking for is the global connection that Sigma provides and the possibility to access research funding.
