Fausto Armando Duarte Rios, is a young nursing professional dedicated to being an advocate for nurses around the world. His involvement in the Nursing Now Challenge is where he found the inspiration to be a leader—an agent for change.

Fausto Armando Duarte Rios made two promises—the first to himself, the second to his mother. Both of these promises inspired him to be who he is today.

When his grandmother suddenly fell ill and he couldn’t do anything to help her in her last moments, Fausto was inspired to choose a profession dedicated to patient care.

“I promised myself that as long as I was caring for a sick person, I would not only do so with professionalism, but also with emotional support and empathy towards the patient’s family as well,” he said.

His second promise, to his mother, was that he would be an example for his brothers and sisters to help them all achieve their goals.

Throughout his education, Fausto realized something he had to do to fulfill those promises—he had to become a change agent to make the nursing profession visible and generate impact at all levels.

“I realized that in the hospital, I could make a positive difference for some patients, but by caring and advocating for necessary changes that improve public health and health policies, it could benefit not only thousands of more patients, but also employment and working conditions of the health professionals,” he said.

To help achieve this mission, Fausto participated in the second cohort of the Nursing Now Challenge (formerly the Nightingale Challenge) through Sigma. This initiative was created as a leadership development opportunity and works to form networks of young health professionals across the world.

“[The Nursing Now Challenge] opened the doors to another level of leadership experience,” Fausto said. “I had the opportunity to meet great young leaders in the nursing world and also gained the confidence to go out of my comfort zone.”

As part of the Nursing Now Challenge, Fausto is also a member of the Challengers Committee—a team dedicated to identifying innovative ways to support nurses and midwives in their roles as health leaders, professionals, and advocates, and to demonstrate that nursing and midwifery are exciting and rewarding careers to improve health recruitment and retention on a global scale.

Fausto said that great agents of change have emerged from the Nursing Now Challenge, and he hopes to do his part to improve nursing visibility and have a positive impact on the profession. Thanks to the skills he obtained from the challenge and his mentors, Fausto has secured a new position working in the United States at El Centro Regional Medical Center.

As Fausto continues to develop himself as a leader—an agent for change—and works to fulfill the promises that started it all, he’s grateful for the opportunity he’s had to learn from other young leaders around the world. His commitment to the Nursing Now initiative remains.

“My wish is to see nursing as a valued and respected profession around the world,” he said “We are a legacy of great nurses; it is now up to us, the youth, to protect nursing around the world. One world, one nursing.”

Fausto Armando Duarte Rios, BS, graduated in 2020 from the Autonomous University of Baja California in Mexicali, Mexico. He is preparing for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam and hopes to soon apply for the NCLEX. Fausto belongs to the Tau Alpha Chapter of Sigma.

Sigma member Juliana Marquezi Pereira, BSN, RN, leads the first liver transplant group in Brazil’s largest public health system—and she’s changing lives daily.

Sigma member Juliana Marquezi Pereira, BSN, RN, says she found her career path by chance. She always thought she wanted to be a diplomat, so she studied politics, international law, and languages. But the need to take care of people close to her made her think how much she could help them and make a difference in everyone's life.

After three years studying history and geography at a public college, Juliana realized she needed a change. After passing the vestibular for nursing—an exam necessary to get into a college or university in Brazil—she started her bachelor's degree in 2007 and graduated in 2011.

Part of the Nurse Team (CNA, BSN)

But then her godmother needed an oncological treatment that they didn't have in their rural city in the State of São Paulo, so Juliana’s family moved to São Paulo City. At the same time, she read a report in a newspaper about upcoming intestinal and multivisceral transplants in Brazil that sparked her interest. She researched and found a multidisciplinary specialization in donation, harvesting, and transplantation of organs and tissues at one of the hospitals qualified to perform that type of transplant. While working on her year of specialization, Juliana was awarded a scholarship and started as an intern at the organ transplant ward at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo which soon led to a full-time job.

Four years after, Juliana was invited to become the Leader of Coordinators and Nursing Liver and Digestive Organs Transplantation, the first liver transplant group in Brazil. It’s the group’s responsibility to plan, manage, monitor, and guide all patients who are enrolled on a liver, pancreas, intestine, and multivisceral transplant list. In addition, they conduct the transplant logistics when there is a donor—confirming data at the Transplant Center and from the donor and recipient surgery along with summoning the patient and the entire team that will work on the surgery. Liver Transplant Coordinators

Working in the largest Brazilian public hospital complex, Juliana is often exposed to new discoveries and rare and difficult cases, which has inspired her to study and research more to improve outcomes for her patients. Recently, her transplant team performed the first uterus transplant in Latin America. The recipient went on to give birth to the first baby ever carried by a uterus transplanted from a deceased donor!

Juliana Marquezi Pereira, BSN, RN, is a Clinical Transport Coordinator in Brazil’s biggest public hospital in São Paulo. She is a member of Sigma’s Rho Upsilon Chapter at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, and she is currently working on an Executive MBA in Health Management along with preparing for her master’s degree in nursing.

Sigma member George Williams Chale Pool cultivates a robust community of nurse leaders on his campus by using social media tactics and member resources.
The power of social media has played a significant role for George Chale Pool, a Sigma member and nursing intern in Mexico. It was just a few months ago when Pool discovered Sigma on social media channels. He quickly realized he had a deep interest in the organization and wanted to connect with other nurse leaders.

With a passion for helping others and improving global health, Pool felt called to the field. He enrolled in nursing school and quickly realized he could help the university reach new heights by offering additional resources to nursing students. Specifically, he wanted to bring leadership development opportunities to his campus. He relied heavily on his Sigma membership and the provided tools to start cultivating a robust community of student nurses who wanted to excel beyond the classroom.

His interest in global initiatives and nursing excellence served as a platform to propel his peers to a path of success. Pool made a decision that ultimately changed his university’s nursing program forever. Inspired by Sigma’s mission and his own personal values, he founded the Mexican Nursing Students Association (MNSA) .

Combined with his commitment to advancing student nurses and smart social media tactics, Pool has seen a significant interest about MNSA. Through his dedication to student nurse leadership and the new-found association, he has been fortunate to see, firsthand, the major developments and advancements in extracurricular involvement on his campus. The success stories of his peers have been one of the most rewarding parts of his academic career.

In addition to his role as MNSA’s president, his Sigma membership, and dedicating time to his studies and internship, Pool finds the time to serve his community as a youth ambassador of My World Mexico and a supporter of Nursing Now.

Meet Fernanda Raphael Escobar Gimenes de Sousa, PhD, MSN, BSN, was awarded a research grant for her study Nasogastric/Nasoenteric Tube-Related Incidents in Hospitalized Patients: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study.

Fernanda Raphael Escobar Gimenes de Sousa, PhD, MSN, BSN, of Rho Upsilon Chapter in Brazil was awarded a research grant for her study Nasogastric/Nasoenteric Tube-Related Incidents in Hospitalized Patients: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study. She shared what led her to pursue nursing, what she’s doing today, and details on her research.

At the age of 9, I underwent an appendectomy and despite the pain I felt, I couldn't help admiring that new world that was presented before my eyes. As the nursing staff guided me on the stretcher through the corridors of the hospital in my hometown, I watched the movement around me, and I was amazed. I was even more amazed by all those nurses around me and surrounded by medical devices and equipment unknown to me. I remember that I kept smiling, dazzled by that scenario. After the surgery, I was hospitalized for a few days. In the following months, I suffered a bicycle accident and fractured my arm. Once again, I needed to be hospitalized. These experiences made me dream of the universe of health and I decided that year to become a nurse.

I am a faculty member at the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing and have been conducting research on patient safety for more than 15 years. Our university is the largest university in Brazil and one of the most prestigious higher education and research institutions in Latin America. Our nursing school is the most prestigious nursing education and research institution in Brazil and in Latin America. It is also a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research Development. In my role as a faculty and leader of the research group on patient safety, I work closely with our clinical partners on integrating research, knowledge translation, management, and practice. Currently, I am coordinating a multicenter study on feeding tube related incidents with the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students.

To our knowledge, this is the first large scale study in Brazil and in Latin America documenting the prevalence of feeding tube incidents. We expect that the results will encourage the use of evidence effectively to influence the scientific foundation for clinical practice and the development of evidence-based policies that will prevent, manage, and eliminate complications caused by feeding tube related incidents, and improve the quality and safety of care provided to hospitalized patients.

Although inserting a nasogastric/nasoenteric tube is a relatively innocuous procedure, improper positioning can cause severe and fatal events. Several single-center studies have identified the prevalence of nasogastric/nasoenteric tube-related incidents in general inpatients; however, there are no studies reporting on those incidents across multiple hospital sites and at a national level.

Enteral tubes are frequently associated with serious and fatal adverse events. Considering that, in Brazil, nasogastric/nasoenteric tubes are inserted by nurses blindly at the bedside, I plan, based on the results, to conduct a study to assess the diagnostic accuracy of clinical methods to distinguish between gastric and pulmonary placement.

Data from this research was used in my post-doctoral program at the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research (CHSSR), Australian Institute for Health Care Innovation, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. For this post-doctoral program, I was awarded with the 2018 Endeavour Research Fellowship from the Australian government. It is a prestigious program supporting high performing individuals to undertake studies, research, and professional development abroad and gain international experience. Candidates from around the world applied for the scholarship and I was one of the selected.

Research grants like the one Fernanda received are funded by donors to the Sigma Foundation for Nursing. Donate today!
